Chewing the Fat: Mike's Trip to Hawaii

Nutrition and fitness discussions between TLN Founder Phil LeClair and Correspondent Mike Davey

Phil: You recently took a trip to awesome Hawaii. So how did you do eating and exercise-wise? Since it was a vacation, did you let it all hang out and stray away from your usually tight eating and exercise routine? Do tell.

Mike: Yes, Phil, I did just get back from Hawaii and all I'll say to our fellow TLNutrition members is that if you've never been to Hawaii make a point to get there at least once in your lifetime. Truly an amazing place to see. Now, on to your question. Well, my intentions before I went on the trip were all good one's!! I brought plenty of protein shake packets and nutrition bars for the trip but never quite stuck to my intentions. I even brought gym clothes with the intent of sneaking in a workout 2 or 3 times. Not!! Read Mike's full reply!

Now, on to your question. Well, my intentions before I went on the trip were all good one's!! I brought plenty of protein shake packets and nutrition bars for the trip but never quite stuck to my intentions. I even brought gym clothes with the intent of sneaking in a workout 2 or 3 times. Not!!

My day of departure began at 2:30am with a good breakfast before I left the house. For the lengthy flights I prepared a container of pasta and grilled chicken, a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread, two protein shake packets, and 2 or 3 nutrition bars. I never succombed to airport food or plane food so I was very happy with Day 1 of the trip.

Throughout the week I proceeded to eat mostly chicken sandwiches, chicken dinners, a steak dinner, and a burger or two. Overall, as vacations go I think I did ok compared to what was available and to what the average "Super Size Me" American would do. Where I fell off the tracks was at the bar. I did drink a lot of beer, Mai Tai's, and the occassional frozen drink (hey, I was in Hawaii on Waikiki Beach...this is the rare occassion where it's ok for a guy to have a frozen drink or two!). So basically I drank all 7 days....that's more than I drink in a year!

My breakfasts left a little to be desired as well (nutritionally speaking, that is). Eggs, french toast, pancakes, hash browns, and toast were the norm. My god, did it feel good to let loose at the breakfast table! However, by the end of the week my body was screaming at me to get back to my obsessive, health conscious ways.

Needless to say I never did work out. Actually, 10 minutes after stepping foot on Waikiki Beach it was more like, "gym? What gym?" I ruled out all plans to workout. Hey, I was due for a week off anyways. I did, however, do a LOT of walking and even climbed the Diamond Head mountain which burnt like hell on the legs at times. So, I wasn't completely void of excercise.

The toughest part of the trip was after I returned home. Aside from being totally depressed about coming home to dreary Massachusetts in mid-December, I was completely drained of all energy for about 4 days. I proceeded to miss another 4 days of workouts simply because all I seemed to want to do when I got home from work was sleep. There's jet lag and then there's jet lag, I was wiped out. But I did fall right back into good eating habits which felt good, but workouts just weren't in the cards yet.

So, that about sums it up. Until the next blog entry...Aloha!!
